Brookite is a
mineral consisting of
titanium oxide, TiO2, and hence identical
with
rutile and
anatase in composition, but
crystallizing in the
orthorhombic system (see
crystal
structure). Brookite occurs rarely compared to the anatase and
rutile forms of titanium dioxide and, unlike these forms, exhibits
no photocatalytic activity.
It was named for Henry James Brooke, English
mineralogist, 1771 - 1857.
